The Blackthorn Blossom

2025

The Blackthorn Blossom draws its inspiration from the ancient blackthorn tree, a symbol woven deeply into British folklore. Its twisting, thorn‑armoured branches and delicate white flowers form the heart of the composition, capturing the tension between beauty and protection, fragility and resilience.

The painting echoes the tree’s early‑spring bloom—those luminous white petals that appear before the leaves, like small lanterns against the dark wood. Their brightness becomes a quiet metaphor for hope emerging from shadow.

Folklore threads through the piece: the blackthorn’s reputation as both guardian and trickster, a tree of thresholds and transformations. This mythic quality is further enriched by the presence—literal or suggested—of the white horses of the New Forest. These wild, spectral figures carry the sense of freedom, mystery, and ancient stories that drift through the landscape. Their pale forms mirror the blossoms themselves.

The result is a painting that feels both grounded in nature and touched by legend. It invites the viewer into a world where the boundaries between tree, myth, and creature blur, and where the quiet magic of the English landscape reveals itself in full bloom.
