We’ve just returned from Menorca’s beautiful west coast, and it's safe to say we’re completely in love with the island. There’s something so special about its laid-back vibe, the warmth of its people, and the incredible food. Plus there's nothing like swimming in the Mediterranean sea. We stayed at a lovely spot right by Cala Santandria beach, just a short drive from Ciutadella, and it felt like the perfect base for our adventures.
One of our favorite routines was waking up early, way before breakfast, and heading straight to the rocks by the hotel to jump into the turquoise sea. There’s a certain magic in those quiet moments just as the sun is rising—the water was surprisingly warm, and it felt like we had the whole coastline to ourselves, except for a little duckling we named ‘Dumpling’ and its mum. Watching them paddle by, pecking at the rocks, added a touch of whimsy to our morning swims.
We quickly learned that by 7:30 am, the south coast beaches were already starting to fill up, so we began saving our beach time for late afternoons instead. One of the most memorable spots we found was Platja Des Bot. It took a bit of effort to get there, but the tranquility and beauty of the place made it all worthwhile.
Evenings were reserved for wandering. We’d head out later than usual, strolling through the streets of Ciutadella as the town came alive with a different kind of energy after dark. Loki even got in on a local game of football, which was a joy to watch.
After dinner, we’d find ourselves meandering through the town, with no particular destination in mind, just enjoying the night. The way the town lights up in the evening is almost cinematic, like something out of a classic film. It was also the perfect time to snap photos for future painting ideas and join the locals in savoring ice cream outside the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Mary as evening prayers drifted through the air.
During the hottest part of the day, I found myself seeking out quiet, shady spots where I could settle in with my sketchbook. I captured swimmers, snorkelers, and passersby, all finding their way onto my pages. One afternoon, a fluffy gray cat wandered over and made itself comfortable, stretching out and pressing its paws against my leg. It felt so familiar, almost like a visit from ‘Wolfy.’
Sketching in Menorca was like gathering inspiration—collecting ideas, colors, and scenes that I know will inspire my work back in the studio. Summer has a way of filling you up with experiences and ideas that carry you through the colder months. Now that we’re back in the UK, it feels like it won't be long until it's hinting at autumn, and I'll feel the pull to cozy up in the studio and start creating again. But for now, I’m holding tight to those sunny memories of Menorca.
